Implications

Bangladesh has proposed offering zero import tariffs on an additional 100 US goods, in addition to the existing 190 products that already have duty-free access. This is an effort to reduce the trade gap and address the US concerns about reciprocal tariffs.   Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin sent a letter to the US Trade Representative proposing this and highlighting that Bangladesh already has a weighted average tariff of only 6.10% on US products, with 0% tariff on raw cotton and 1% on steel scrap.   Bangladesh's interim head, Muhammad Yunus, has also written to President Trump requesting a three-month pause on the implementation of the 37% tariff to allow for discussions and to highlight Bangladesh's efforts to increase imports from the US.   Bangladesh is also planning to reduce tariffs on other major US export items, such as gas turbines, semiconductors, and medical equipment, by 50%.   Efforts are underway to remove non-tariff barriers for US exports, including simplifying customs procedures, and rationalizing packaging, labeling, and certification requirements.   Bangladesh is also looking to increase imports of US agricultural products like cotton, wheat, corn, and soybeans and is finalizing a dedicated bonded warehousing facility for duty-free US cotton.
